DECOVISION XPS Foam Sheets — The Crafter's Choice for Premium Extruded Polystyrene

At DECOVISION, we manufacture extruded polystyrene (XPS) foam sheets in the United Kingdom and supply them direct — without the distributor markup you pay elsewhere. XPS is the dense, closed-cell form of polystyrene produced by forcing molten resin through an extrusion die. The result is a rigid board with a smooth surface, sharp clean edges and far better water resistance than the cheap expanded polystyrene (EPS) sheets widely available online.

What Makes DECOVISION XPS Different?

  • Dense closed-cell structure — smooth, crack-resistant surface that holds paint beautifully without sanding
  • Sharp clean edges — cuts precisely with a craft knife, hand saw or hot wire foam cutter
  • Moisture resistant — closed-cell XPS does not absorb water like EPS
  • Lightweight & rigid — easy to handle, score and snap
  • Paintable — takes water-based emulsion and acrylic paint evenly
  • Made in the UK — manufactured and despatched from our UK facility

For Crafters & Artists

Our A5, A4 and A3 sheets in 5 mm, 10 mm and 20 mm are ideal for school projects, cake toppers, lino-style stamps, stage props, wedding signs, Christmas village bases and mixed-media artwork. The smooth surface takes water-based emulsion and acrylic paint evenly, so your finish looks clean without sanding.

For Model Makers

Railway modellers, 1:12 and 1:6 dollhouse builders, wargame terrain crafters and architectural students all use XPS as a lightweight, carvable base. Slice cleanly with a craft knife for crisp edges, or shape contours with a hot wire cutter for flowing landscape scenery. Bonds beautifully with PVA or double-sided tape.

For DIY Projects Around the Home

Thicker sheets (30 mm to 80 mm) in A1 and A2 sizes are useful for lining shed roofs, garage doors, conservatory ceilings, summerhouse walls and loft hatches. XPS has thermally insulating properties and resists water vapour thanks to its closed-cell structure.

For Packaging & Display

Protect fragile artwork, prints and board games in transit with clean-cut foam inserts, or use larger sheets as lightweight backing for photo displays and exhibition boards.

Important Notes

  • Use only solvent-free adhesives — solvent-based sprays or glues will dissolve XPS.
  • Paint with water-based emulsion or acrylic paint only.
  • Do not use spray paints unless specifically labelled XPS-safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between XPS and EPS foam?

XPS (extruded polystyrene) is denser, smoother and more moisture-resistant than EPS (expanded polystyrene). EPS is the white, crumbly foam used in packaging. XPS has a uniform closed-cell structure that gives cleaner cuts and a better paint surface.

Can I cut XPS foam with a craft knife?

Yes. Score with a sharp craft knife and snap along the line for a clean edge. For more complex shapes, use a hot wire foam cutter. A fine-tooth hand saw also works well for thicker sheets.

What glue works with XPS foam?

PVA glue, double-sided tape and solvent-free foam adhesive all bond well. Never use superglue, contact cement or any solvent-based adhesive as these dissolve polystyrene.

Can I paint XPS foam?

Yes. Water-based emulsion and acrylic paints work perfectly. The smooth surface requires no priming. Avoid solvent-based or oil-based paints.

Is this suitable for outdoor use or insulation?

DECOVISION XPS sheets are water-resistant and have basic thermal insulating properties, making them suitable for light DIY insulation tasks. They are not rated as structural insulation boards.

Working with XPS (extruded polystyrene) foam sheets:

  • Cut with a sharp knife, hot-wire cutter or fine saw.
  • Bond with solvent-free adhesives only - solvent products dissolve polystyrene.
  • Sand lightly for shaping; finish with water-based paints.
