Period homes reward attention to detail. The right coving can restore character to a Victorian terrace or bring warmth to an older cottage — but old houses also bring practical challenges: ceilings that are rarely level, walls that are rarely straight, and plaster that does not always welcome heavy fixings. This guide covers how to choose and fit coving in an older property.
XPS (Extruded Polystyrene) coving is very light, which changes the job completely in an old house:
As a starting point: measure your ceiling height. Rooms around 2.4 m suit compact profiles; rooms of 2.7 m and above can carry deeper, more decorative designs. Browse our DV-U0 Series for a classic cornice look, or the VLS Series if you want a larger feature profile. If your rooms have a ceiling pendant, a paintable ceiling rose completes the period look.
Many of our profiles are designed to carry an LED strip behind the top edge. Indirect light washing across an old ceiling softens imperfections rather than highlighting them — a practical alternative to spotlights in rooms where the ceiling is not perfectly flat.
The full step-by-step method is in our guide: How to Fit Coving.
Older properties often have room dimensions that do not match modern standards. If a standard length or profile does not fit your space, see our Custom Orders page — selected profiles can be cut to order.
In a period home, seeing the profile against your own ceiling matters more than anywhere else. Order a sample of the profile you are considering, hold it up in the room, and check the scale and style in your own light before committing to a full order.
